Holden delighted to open Walsall account

18 February 2020

Walsall midfielder Rory Holden was delighted to score his first goal in English Football against Northampton Town on Saturday.

The 22-year-old opened his account for the Saddlers in style, netting a 93rd minute winner to spark wild scenes of celebration at the Banks’s Stadium.

Holden felt he needed a bit of luck to get his first goal and was pleased to see the ball hit the back of the net.

“I’m buzzing, I’ve never had that feeling before,” he said.

“I’ve scored in Ireland but it’s not the same with the fans getting behind you, it was fantastic.

“The timing was perfect to score my first goal in the 93rd minute to win it.

“It’s my first professional goal.

“Wes did really well to play it into me and it was a bit of luck but I think I needed that after so many games.”

Holden has played 34 times for Darrell Clarke’s side this season and is looking to kick on after netting his first of the season.

With fellow midfielder Danny Guthrie also scoring his first Walsall goal, Holden has now called on the Saddler midfield to chip in with more goals.

“I would love to pitch in more but hopefully that is now the first of many and for Danny as well.

“Josh took his 11th of the season really well so there’s positives all over the place.

“We all have to chip in with goals, if we can score as many as we can from midfield it will help us massively.”

The Saddlers are back at the Banks’s this weekend as they take on Port Vale on Saturday.
