Clarke insists his side will learn from Crewe defeat

3 February 2020

Walsall boss Darrell Clarke insists his side will learn from Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Crewe Alexandra.

The Saddlers made a bright start and took the lead through Caolan Lavery in the first half but goals from Daniel Powell and Oliver Finney saw the Railwaymen turn the game on its head.

While Clarke praised his team for their positive first half display, he was disappointed with their second half performance and wants to his players to learn from the defeat.

"I thought for the first 45 minutes the lads were brilliant but for the second 45 we were very poor and that's probably been the story of some of the season,” Clarke admitted.

"It's been a disastrous week and it's a missed opportunity massively.

"We put more pressure on ourselves with the last two results and we have to learn from that.

"We have to keep learning and they will - they'll come back from it.

"Like I keep saying, there's a good spirit amongst the group and we need to keep working and making sure we're getting better.

"We'll pick up as many points between now and the end of the season to build a proper challenge next season.

"You look at the likes of Crewe and he (David Artell) has had a good time with the squad now.

"He's doing a cracking job now and that's what you get.

"That's what we'll get with our club and my players as we tweak along the way.”

The Saddlers have suffered three consecutive defeats in what’s been a disappointing week.

One positive for Clarke was the support of the fans at the Banks’s Stadium.

"I thought the fans were fantastic,” he said.

"The fans in general have a massive understanding, they're not daft Walsall fans, they know where we are as a club.

"They hopefully know what I'm trying to do and progress.

"Rome was never built in a day and we need to keep working away and keep the positivity.

"There's a real good understanding with myself, the chairman, the board and the players of where we're heading.

"We're all on the same page.”

The Saddlers now turn their attention to this weekend’s trip to Forest Green Rovers.
