Clarke pleased with clinical Saddlers

7 December 2020

Walsall manager Darrell Clarke was pleased with his team’s clinical performance against Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

Goals from Elijah Adebayo, Wes McDonald and Dan Scarr helped the Saddlers earn an impressive 3-1 victory at Prenton Park.

Clarke felt his side had good cutting edge against Tranmere and compared the performance to the one against Newport County back in November.

“It was on par, potentially, with the Newport performance with a clinicalness about us,” said Clarke.

“That’s what we’ve been asking for and to cut out the individual errors.

“I’m really pleased that we got three goals on the front foot. We created many opportunities against a team in form.

“We’ll take that, three points.

“We worked well from the front and the game plan worked nicely.

“We had those areas where we were a little bit more clinical.

“Albeit I’m still frustrated we didn’t get a few more, to be honest. There were opportunities to make the game a little bit more comfortable. Tranmere are a good team and they kept going.

"For me, we've been dominant in quite a few games if you look at the stats.

"(On Saturday) it came together a bit more with the goals.

"We keep working away with the group. We're not getting carried away, it's a good win at Tranmere against a team that's in form.

"We take that and move on to next Saturday.”

McDonald scored his first league goal of the campaign with a sensational strike from outside the box.

Clarke feels the goal will give the 23-year-old a confidence boost but was delighted with the quality of the goal.

"We know Wes has got the quality to produce what he does,” Clarke commented.

"We give him as much confidence as we possibly can, in the cruel reality of the footballing world.

"It doesn't affect him. He turns up every day and we know on his day he can be that match winner.

"I'm pleased with that great, quality goal.

"It was nice and will give him a bit more confidence.”
