Report: Morecambe 0-1 Walsall

17 September 2019

Walsall won their first game since the opening day of the season after a battling display away at Morecambe.

Stuart Sinclair scored the only goal of the game after just four minutes and it proved to be enough to see the Saddlers pick up their second win on the road and a fifth clean sheet in all competitions.

Darrell Clarke named an unchanged team to the side that lost 1-0 at home to Bradford City at the weekend.

The only changed to the bench saw Cameron Norman replace Callum Cockerill-Mollett.

Walsall made the perfect start and took the lead after four minutes when Barry Roche blocked Rory Gaffney’s shot with his feet but the ball fell to Sinclair who was on hand to tap in the rebound.

Morecambe responded well but the Saddlers looked threatening when given the chance to go forward.

Liam Kinsella dragged a shot just wide after a decent move on 22 minutes.

Morecambe had spells of pressure in the first half but rarely tested Liam Roberts and the visitors went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Clarke’s men made a strong start to the second half. Rory Holden bent one over the bar before Caolan Lavery forced a good save out of Roche with his feet.

Morecambe had their moments in the second half. Shaun Miller had a goal ruled out for a clear offside on 55 minutes.

There weren’t too many clear-cut chances in the second half. Gaffney tried to bend one in but it took a deflection and went wide on 71 minutes.

The Saddlers held on as Morecambe applied late pressure and picked up a crucial three points.

Walsall: Roberts, Clarke, Scarr, Sinclair, Kinsella, Lavery (Gordon 74’), Holden (Sadler 84’), Guthrie, Liddle, Gaffney, Jules
Rose (GK), Norman, Hardy, Bates, McDonald.
