Clarke: 'There will be some changes'

3 September 2019

Walsall boss Darrell Clarke says he will make some changes for tonight’s Leasing.com Trophy game against Coventry City.

A number of players, including new signing Rory Gaffney, are yet to make their debuts for the Saddlers and could make their first appearance tonight.

While Clarke is keen to see partnerships develop in his squad in the coming weeks, he admitted there could be a few alterations made to the starting XI this evening.

“There will be some changes,” Clarke revealed.

“Some players haven’t even made their debut yet so I’m trying to settle it all down, trying to get the balance of when they can come in and make a bit of a difference but that’s very difficult as a manager to just keep swinging them in.

“You’ve got to be careful about how many changes you make when it’s a new developing group because football games are won on partnerships and you want to build those partnerships.

“We’re still looking for that winning formula.”

The Saddlers have had some disappointing results in recent weeks and will be looking to bounce back with two away games this week.

Clarke has called on the squad to show mental strength and insists tonight’s game is a crucial one.

“Every single game is important,” he said.

“We’ve had a bad start to the season with a new group of players.

“Like I said to the players, it’s these moments you have to remember and have stay mentally strong.

“People question the manager, they question the decisions and everyone’s rubbish, you’ve got to stay mentally strong.

“When you do turn it around, because hard work does turn it around, it’s even sweeter. You’re going to lose a few fans when you lose but I’m hoping the majority of fans can see what we’re trying to build, albeit the results haven’t come as yet.”
