Preview: Swindon v Walsall

31 October 2019

The Saddlers will be hoping to improve their form in November after a bitterly disappointing October.

Walsall are 21st in League Two while Swindon are 5th and just one point adrift of the automatic promotion places.

TEAM NEWS

Mat Sadler will serve the second game of his three match ban so will miss the trip to the Energy Check County Ground.

As for Swindon, Captain Dion Conroy is a long-term absentee.

FORM GUIDE

The Saddlers had a disappointing October which saw them lose five league games in a row.

The Robins have won their last two league games, much to the relief of Richie Wellens after they went on a run of five without a win before their victories over Stevenage and Crawley Town.

HEAD TO HEAD

Walsall and Swindon have met 98 times overall.

The Saddlers have come out on top on 34 occasions while Swindon have won 35 of the meetings between the two clubs.

Walsall won the most recent meeting between the two sides. Joe Edwards scored an 85th minute winner to seal a 1-0 victory at the Banks’s Stadium in April 2017.

In the last meeting at the Energy Check County Ground, Erhun Oztumer scored a brace as the Saddlers won 2-0 in October 2016.

FROM THE DUGOUT

Darrell Clarke: “They have big players. You look at their squad and they have Doyle who has scored 13 in 13. They’ve got Michael Doughty and Anthony Grant in midfield, who are experienced at this level. It’s going to be a tough ask but we look at Saturday as another opportunity to get a result.”

Richie Wellens: “On his day, Elijah is a handful. He’s a lovely lad, a good kid that always had a smile on his face. From the games we have watched him play, we felt he has done quite well. He’s one of Walsall’s better players.”

PLAYED FOR BOTH

Walsall striker Elijah Adebayo had a short spell on-loan at Swindon last season.

The forward netted five goals during his six month spell in Wiltshire.

Other players who have played for both clubs are defenders Ben Purkiss and Matt Preston.
