Match Report: Oldham 2-0 Walsall

22 October 2019

Ten-man Walsall fell to their fourth consecutive defeat against Oldham Athletic.

After a promising first half performance from the Saddlers, the game changed seven minutes into the second half when Mat Sadler was given his marching orders for a deliberate handball.

Scott Wilson and Desire Segbe Azankpo netted for Oldham as they made their advantage count.

Darrell Clarke made five changes to the team that lost to Cheltenham Town at the weekend.

Dan Scarr returned to the side after serving his suspension but Liam Kinsella was banned after picking up five yellow cards.

Jack Rose made his league debut for the Saddlers in place of Liam Roberts while Sadler, Rory Holden and Elijah Adebayo came in for Zak Jules, Wes McDonald, and Gary Liddle.

Neither side could get a foothold in a scrappy opening 25 minutes.

Walsall finished the half on top and did have a couple of half chances through Rory Gaffney and Dan Scarr.

Rose was forced into a save two minutes before half time when he pushed McCann’s powerful drive behind.

Cameron Pring’s night ended prematurely as he was forced off at half-time and replaced by Jules.

Walsall made a disastrous start to the second half. They were reduced to ten-men when Mat Sadler handled the ball and was given a straight red card on 52 minutes.

Two minutes later, the Latics took the lead when the ball was cut back to Wilson and he smashed it into the top corner.

It got worse for the Saddlers as Oldham doubled their advantage on 69 minutes when Segbe Azankpo slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Jules picked up a knock in the build up to the goal and stayed down throughout the move. He also had to come off and was replaced by Shay Facey for his first league appearance for the Saddlers.

The ten-men tried to get back into the game. Scarr forced a save out of Zeus De La Paz with a low strike but it proved to be another disappointing evening for the Saddlers.

Rose (GK), Clarke ©, Scarr, Sadler, Pring (Jules 45’, Facey 74’); Holden, Sinclair, Bates, Gordon, Gaffney (Norman 55’), Adebayo.
Subs: Roberts (GK), McDonald, Liddle, Willis.
