Honours even as Walsall draw with Darlaston at grand opening

6 November 2019

A Walsall reserve team drew 2-2 with Darlaston on Tuesday evening in a friendly at the Paycare Ground.

The Saddlers were invited to play the game to mark the grand opening of Darlaston’s new floodlights.

Darrell Clarke’s squad included a handful of first team players – James Hardy, Jack Kiersey, Kory Roberts and Callum Cockerill-Mollett.

The squad also included four trialists and Under 16s.

Callum Derry gave the Saddlers the lead in the first half but Darlaston equalised just four minutes into the second half.

Hardy restored Walsall’s lead on 62 minutes, finishing from close range but Darlaston levelled again right at the death when the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line despite the trialist goalkeeper getting his gloves to it.

Walsall manager Clarke said: “It was nice to come down and help out a local team. They’re right on our doorstep and we thought it would be a nice thing to do when they open their floodlights.

“We looked at a couple of trialists and it was nice for the Under 16s to be involved as well. Nice to see Jack Kiersey get some minutes into their belts.

“I’d like to wish Darlaston all the very best for the future.”

Darlaston manager Andy Parkes added: “I’d like to thank Walsall for coming down, it was absolutely superb.

“It was massive for the club to get Darrell and the boys to come down and it was a great occasion.

“For a professional club to come and be involved with non-league football and show their support was fantastic.”

Walsall line-up: Trialist A (GK), Little, Trialist B, K. Roberts, Leak, Cockerill-Mollett, Kiersey, Trialist 3, Derry, Hardy, Friel.
Subs: Clapp (GK), Dunkley, Harper, Hunter, Purnell, Trialist D, Dawkins.
