Clarke: 'It was a really entertaining game'

18 November 2019

Walsall boss Darrell Clarke felt their electric start against Cambridge United was key to picking up their first league win since September.

Goals from Josh Gordon and Mat Sadler gave the Saddlers a 2-0 lead after just 10 minutes on Saturday as they went on to claim a deserved victory.

Clarke praised his players for standing up to the challenge and was also pleased to see Walsall put on a show for the fans.

“I thought it was a really entertaining game to watch,” he said.

“We’ve had umpteen opportunities on the counter-attack in the second half but I thought my players stood up to it, battled well and worked hard.

“We got the initiative early in the game, which was pleasing to see and that gets your fans behind you.

“That’s what I’m talking about at home, if you can start bright.

“Our fans have been great this season and they’ll get behind you when you score that early goal.

“We’ve got a big week for the football club and it’s a great start so we have to make sure we keep building on these last two results.”

Walsall are now unbeaten in their last three games in all competitions.

The Saddlers will turn their attention to their Emirates FA Cup First Round replay against Darlington on Wednesday before another crucial league game against Stevenage and Clarke insists they won’t be getting carried away as they look to build momentum.

"You have to reset yourself,” explained Clarke.

"No two games are the same.

"You just have to be prepared for things in the game (on Saturday) and I thought there were a lot of good performances out there.

"But we won't be getting carried away.

"You have to show a level head.

"When we had four wins in September I was saying ‘we're a million miles away from the finished article.’

"That isn't going to change for a considerable amount of time.

"It's up to me and my staff to keep working with the players and getting better.

Clarke will be hoping his side can progress to the second round of the FA Cup with victory at Darlington on Wednesday night.
