Walsall School Runners-Up at Wembley

31 May 2019

Leighswood School represented the club in the EFL Kids Cup League One Final on Sunday.

The Year 5 and 6 pupils beat over 30 schools in the local competition at the Banks’s Stadium, to win the opportunity to represent the Saddlers at the Northern Area Finals.

The boys then came out on top as Area winners, against the other 11 northern teams, earning them a once in a lifetime chance to play at Wembley Stadium in the grand final!

The teams were given a tour of the iconic stadium, used the dressing rooms prior to the game, and played on the pitch a few hours prior to the League One play-off final.

It wasn’t to be for Walsall, as Leighswood were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Wycombe Wanderers’ The Gerrards Cross C of E School.

Paul Larvin, Community Manager for Education, said: “The boys were really unlucky in the final. They played well and it was a great free-kick by Wycombe that won it in the end.

“Even so, it was a fantastic experience and something the boys and their families will remember forever.

“It’s the furthest any Walsall team has ever gone in the EFL Kids Cup, and the school should be really proud of their achievement.”
