Walsall 2-0 Fleetwood

9 March 2019

The Saddlers earned a much-needed three points against Fleetwood Town as goals from Morgan Ferrier and Dan Scarr secured the victory.

In a very cagey and close first half, there weren’t many clear-cut chances to report as both sides looked to work each other out.

Just before the half-hour mark, Liam Roberts was called into action from a Fleetwood free-kick from all of 30-yards.

Over the ball was the lively Wes Burns but his dipping effort was dealt with well by Roberts as the Saddlers number one managed to tip the ball around the post.

In the second half, the Saddlers looked revitalised and the energy was there from the first blow of the referee’s whistle.

Just five minutes into the half and Zeli Ismail produced a dangerous cross, which Alex Cairns had to have two efforts at claiming and fortunately for the Town keeper, there wasn’t a player in a red shirt to tap the ball home into an empty net.

Four minutes later and the Saddlers got the goal their second-half start deserved.

Following successive corners, captain George Dobson found Ferrier at the back post after his left-wing kick evaded everyone and the striker, who returned to the starting XI, was able to just tap it into an empty net.

With 67 minutes on the clock, the Saddlers doubled their lead to all-but put the game out of the reach of visitors Fleetwood.

Liam Kinsella picked the ball up on the edge of the box before floating it to the back post where he found Luke Leahy. The full-back then headed the ball back across goal where Scarr was able to poke the ball between Cairns’ legs to double our advantage.

In the final 20 minutes, the Saddlers stayed strong to pick up their second win in as many home games, while also keeping successive clean sheets for the first time this season.
