Walsall FC are saddened to learn of the passing of former player Graham Newton, aged 76.
A forward, he scored 12 goals in 34 appearances for the Saddlers between 1962 and 1964, playing on with a broken ankle in the ill-fated Division Two match against Charlton in 1963.
He also enjoyed spells at Wolves, Blackpool, Coventry, Bournemouth, Port Vale and Atlanta Chiefs, where he won a Championship medal.
On returning home, he managed local non-league clubs for a number of years and became captain of Patshull Park, his local golf club.
A tireless fundraiser for the Teenage Cancer Trust, ‘Newty’ was a regular attendee at Former Players’ Day and attended a Walsall game just three weeks ago.
The thoughts of everyone at the club go out to his family and friends at this sad time.
