Tranmere 0-0 Walsall

27 July 2019

The Saddlers’ final pre-season friendly of the summer ended in a goalless draw against League One newcomers Tranmere at a rain-soaked Prenton Park.

Walsall were first to threaten as Liam Kinsella swapped passes with Shay Facey before hitting a right-footed strike which Rovers keeper Scott Davies claimed at the second attempt.

The home side responded with Ollie Banks curling a 25-yard effort just wide of the top corner.

There was a stoppage in play after 17 minutes as ground staff came on with rollers and pitch forks to try and clear the standing water.

Play resumed, with Jake Caprice threading through Stefan Payne but his fierce near-post strike was parried by visiting stopper Liam Roberts.

The Saddlers should have scored seven minutes before the break when Facey’s cross dropped to Josh Gordon but he dragged his effort agonisingly wide from six yards.

Gordon went close again on the hour mark with a bouncing effort from Cameron Norman’s cross that brushed the top of the net.

Chances remained at a premium; Norman sent a tame header into the arms of Davies from Danny Guthrie’s free-kick, while Ishmael Miller headed over from Kieron Morris’ corner.

Saddlers team: Roberts, Clarke (Scarr 45’), Sadler, Cockerill-Mollett, Bates (McDonald 58’), Kinsella (Sinclair 45’), Liddle (Guthrie 58’), Gordon, Facey (Norman 58’), Ferrier (Hardy 58’), Pring (Holden 58’).
