Young Reporter: Walsall 1-2 Scunthorpe

15 January 2019

The Saddlers faced a resurgent Scunthorpe side on a good run of form. This was a crunch league game at The Banks's and a crowd of 3,984, including 441 away fans, were there to witness it.

The home side started a bit slowly and looked nervous. This may have been a result of last week's disappointing FA Cup loss at Bolton.

Things weren't helped early on when Ferrier went down holding his thigh muscle and had to be replaced by Gordon. Then, almost immediately.....

GOAL! From a corner in the 11th minute, Ojo, who was totally unmarked on the edge of the box, blasted in a volley to put The Iron ahead. Definitely a case of poor marking!

Walsall at last came to life. Osbourne and Edwards got into the game and the dangerous Ismail created one or two chances for Cook.

Speaking of Cook: the big centre forward was struggling with a shoulder injury and didn't look like he'd be out for the second half.

Walsall applied more pressure after the break and.....

GOAL! In the 53rd minute, Devlin picked up the ball outside the box and weaved his way past a couple of defenders before smashing an unstoppable rocket into the top corner. Game on!!

Both teams were now probing for a winner but unfortunately in the 67th minute the visitors found one....

GOAL! Following a Walsall attack, Scunthorpe broke quickly and Novak tucked home a neat finish to send the away fans delirious. Sucker punch!

Walsall brought on new boy, Mussa, near the end in an attempt to grab a point. However, the away side held on for a vital victory, which takes them above us in the table.

In the press conference afterwards, the gaffer was obviously disappointed. He thought we deserved something from the game but admitted confidence is low at the moment.

Tricky away games at Gillingham and Plymouth await next....UTS!!
