Walsall 1-2 Scunthorpe

12 January 2019

Goals from Funso Ojo and Lee Novak either side of the break gave the visitors Scunthorpe United all three points at the Banks’s Stadium despite a resurgent second half performance from the Saddlers.

A bright start from Dean Keates’ side was undone when Ojo was picked out unmarked on the edge of the box from a left-wing corner and his first time volley flew into the back of the net through a host of bodies, leaving Liam Roberts with little chance.

Following the goal, the Saddlers brushed themselves down and went in search of an equaliser and nearly found one when Zeli Ismail picked out leading goal scorer Andy Cook on the edge of the box, only for his turn and shot to be pushed behind by Jak Alnwick.

10 minutes into the second half and the Saddlers got the equaliser that their efforts deserved when Nicky Devlin picked the ball up just inside the Scunthorpe half before a lung-busting run saw him into the area where he smashed the ball past Jak Alnwick.

With 68 minutes on the clock, United regained the lead as Novak was slipped in just on the edge of the box and his dinked finish spun round Roberts and Devlin and rolled into the bottom corner.

Despite their best efforts in the final 20 minutes of the game, the Saddlers were unable to find a way back into the game.
