Dean Keates hailed a “perfect team performance” after the Saddlers’ comfortable 3-0 victory at Gillingham.
An Andy Cook hat-trick earned the Saddlers a first win in eight matches – and the boss couldn’t have been happier.
“We were outstanding from start to finish,” said a delighted Keates.
“It’s been difficult over the last few weeks but I’m over the moon with them. It was a good professional performance.
“Performance-wise, over the last few weeks, we’ve been quite close to doing something but we’ve not helped ourselves.
“But every decision the players made defensively were spot on. Their two chances – two [Tom] Eaves headers – were both offside. We restricted them to shots from 35 yards plus.
“It was a full team effort. Cooky came away with the headlines and took his chances, but it was a perfect team performance.”
The treble was Cook’s first for the Saddlers, taking his season tally to 15 in all competitions.
“Cooky scores goals and I knew that by bringing the lad into the football club,” Keates added.
“He works and puts himself about. He gets into people’s faces and does a job for the team. When he gets opportunities, he scores goals.
“That’s why I brought Matt Jarvis into the club – you saw what he was about with the two crosses.”
