Cook: Gills win can be a turning point

21 January 2019

Hat-trick hero Andy Cook believes the Saddlers’ 3-0 win over Gillingham could be a turning point in the season.

The striker notched goals 13, 14 and 15 of the season in the comfortable victory over the Gills - the Saddlers' first win in eight.

Having now achieved his pre-season target of 15 goals, the 28-year-old is looking ahead to his next milestone - 20.

“I am buzzing with the hat-trick,” said Cook.

“Scoring the two goals early, I was thinking in the back of my mind hopefully I will get another chance and if I do I will take it.

“The main thing was getting the win and hopefully now we have turned a corner with the way results have been going for us.

“We knew that the next goal could change the game but we managed to get it and it killed the game off. That is exactly what we needed.

“We have played games where we have been 2-0 up and thrown it away.

“Obviously, that is going to be at the back of everybody's mind but at Gillingham we dug it out and got the win.

“When I joined the club - with it being my first season in the league - I said I wanted 15 goals.

“But in my head, because I have got 20 in the last four years, I wanted 20 again.

“I'm on course for that now. Who knows I might get 25 but it doesn't matter how many goals I get as long as we are winning games.”
