McDonald: "I'm claiming that one"

27 December 2019

Wes McDonald insists the opening goal at Scunthorpe was his after it took a deflection on the way in.

The winger netted his fifth of the season with the opening goal on Boxing Day as the Saddlers beat the Irons 2-0.

His effort took a deflection on the way in and the 22-year-old has no doubts that it is his goal and not an own goal.

“I’m claiming that,” he said.

“I’m sure it was curling in so I’m claiming that one.

“It was perfect timing, you always want a goal to break the deadlock before half time.

“I thought it was a very good away performance, the lads dug deep, stuck to the gameplan and we got the three points. We were solid, got the blocks off so credit to the defenders. We defended as a unit, we were compact and we did the job.”

264 Saddlers fans travelled to Lincolnshire to see Walsall record their fifth away victory of the season and McDonald praised them for their excellent support and has been delighted with how well they’ve taken to him.

“The fans are excellent,” he commented.  “They’re always giving me confidence. Whenever I’m on the pitch they’re screaming, they’re loud and always give me that extra boost so I’m grateful for that.”

Tickets are still available for Walsall’s next game against Carlisle United tomorrow at the Banks’s Stadium.
