Clarke: 'I have a good selection headache'

8 August 2019

Walsall boss Darrell Clarke says he will have a selection headache ahead of Saturday’s clash with Forest Green Rovers.

A number of Saddlers players featured in a behind closed doors friendly on Tuesday against Kidderminster Harriers.

The game provided the chance for players to get some game time under their belts and Clarke was impressed by what he saw.

“The lads got some minutes into them,” he said.

“I’ve got a good selection headache because it was a good performance from the boys who haven’t play 90 minutes yet.

“They’re champing at the bit to make their debuts and we’re looking forward to this next game.”

Clarke is expecting a tricky test from Forest Green this weekend but is keen for the Saddlers to build strong momentum at the Banks's Stadium this season, starting with a positive result against Mark Cooper’s side.

“Any successful team has good home form so we want to get some momentum at home,” he commented.

“They’re a tough team Forest Green, they were thereabouts last year.

“They’re a well organised, possession-based team so it’s going to be a tough ask but every team in this division gives you different difficulties.

“They’ll have different strengths and different weaknesses and that’s been our working week working towards this next game.

“We certainly want to get our home form kicking off, we got a good three points away from home last week so we’ll try and get three points at home this week.”

Saddlers fans may get a glimpse of new striker Caolan Lavery, who joined on a free transfer earlier this week.

Clarke gave a bit of a lowdown on his latest recruit and reiterated that he is still eyeing one more forward.

“He’s a striker, first and foremost and we’re still after another one,” Clarke confirmed.

“I think he (Lavery) has got a decent pedigree, he's probably had one or two too many loans for me but he’s found a home now and we want to kick him on.

“I like my strikers hard working.

“They get judged on goals and his goalscoring record is not too bad so hopefully he’ll improve in those areas but he’s a winner and that’s what we need amongst the group.

“I said last week that there would be two strikers joining before deadline.”
