Clarke pleased with opening-day win

3 August 2019

Saddlers boss Darrell Clarke was pleased to start the 2019/20 League Two season on a winning note with a 1-0 opening-day victory at Northampton.

A first-half header from namesake James Clarke ensured the 41-year-old’s Walsall reign off to the perfect start.

And the former Bristol Rovers chief praised his side’s game management after a professional away performance.

“It was an ugly, scruffy 1-0,” said Darrell Clarke.

“First game of the season, it takes a bit of time to calm down. I never get carried away.

“We enjoyed our win at the end with the fans, who have come out in their numbers. Fantastic support so that’s a thank you to them.

“The keeper has had to pull off some top saves, but that’s what happens if you need to win away from home in this league.

“I’m really pleased with the clean sheet, the effort and determination of the group, to not give anything away, and the good game management.”
