Previous Meeting: Blackpool 0-4 Walsall

1 September 2018

Ahead of today's match against Blackpool, Joshua Bunting takes a look at a previous meeting between the two sides...

On this occasion, the Saddlers ran out 4-0 winners at Bloomfield Road in August 2015.

Romaine Sawyers opened and completed the scoring to take his tally for the season to four, with a Tom Aldred own goal and a Sam Mantom header in between.

Blackpool had actually started well and inside the first minute David Ferguson's piledriver was well-held by Saddlers goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

The Saddlers, however, got on top and Sawyers wasted Tom Bradshaw's assist by blazing wide from 10 yards.

Sawyers soon made amends by poking Jason Demetriou's through ball past Seasiders keeper Kyle Letheren to give Walsall a 25th-minute lead.

Mantom was twice inches away from doubling Walsall's lead before the break but they finally made it 2-0 after 57 minutes, Aldred turning Rico Henry's cross into his own net.

Bradshaw crashed a sweet strike against a post before Mantom's powerful header from a Demetriou cross made it 3-0.

And Sawyers wrapped up the scoring with a stunning 25-yard strike into the top corner in the 74th minute.

This result saw Dean Smith’s side go top of the League One table, in what turned out by a fantastic season for the Saddlers, despite losing to Barnsley in the play-offs.

Smith said: "There was a lot of expectation for us to win but teams don't just roll over. The team are giving me real selection teasers at the moment. The fluidity of the team is really impressing me”.

It was a day of total domination for the visitors, who recorded 58% possession and 19 shots on goal.
