Young Reporter: Walsall 3-2 Wycombe

29 October 2018

On a chilly afternoon at the Banks's, the Saddlers were looking for a win after two disappointing away defeats. The visitors from Buckinghamshire were in good form and a crowd of 4,265 (589 away fans) was there to see, what turned out to be, a cracking match.

The early exchanges were fairly even with both sides on the attack, looking to create chances. Ferrier for Walsall and Mackail-Smith for Wycombe should have scored and it got even scarier a few minutes later when the away team hit the bar.

GOAL!! In the 36th minute, Ronan fired in a free-kick that Cook nudged home to calm everyone down.

The Saddlers deservedly went into the break a goal to the good.

The home side started the second half really well and it wasn't long before they doubled their lead...

GOAL!! In the 52nd minute, Wilson set up Osbourne for a tap in and the home crowd roared its approval.

Actually, it should have been three in the 76th minute when Cook and Ferrier spurned a great chance on the break. Instead, the visitors were gifted a way back into the match...

GOAL!! Leahy nervously lobbed his own keeper in the 80th minute. Walsall was now looking slightly edgy but...

GOAL!! A superb run and cross from Dobson in the 83rd minute was eventually turned into the Wycombe net by one of their own players.

Surely, at 3-1, it was all over...?

GOAL!! Dobson blotted his record by conceding a late penalty. Roberts stopped the first effort but not the rebound.

Wycome piled on the pressure but the Saddlers hung on for a precious home win. Phew!

In the press conference, the assistant boss, Andy Davies, was happy with the win but disappointed with the goals conceded. He was also looking forward to the next four games, which are all at home. UTS!!
