Versatile Wilson happy to play anywhere

12 October 2018

Kane Wilson is happy to play anywhere for the Saddlers.

The 18-year-old has featured predominantly at right-back since arriving on a season-long loan from West Brom.

However, the youngster also played at left-back in the Checkatrade Trophy victory at Burton and was deployed wide right after coming on against Blackpool.

And Wilson, who has made ten appearances in all competitions, says he will fill in wherever needed.

“It doesn’t really bother me which side of defence I play,” he commented.

“Playing at left-back will obviously bring different positives but it will also bring different negatives.

“I can’t do certain things on my left foot that I can on my right but it does allow me to go either way. It is easier for me to stand the ball up with my left foot than it is to whip a ball into the top corner coming in on my right.

“No position really bothers me, whether it is as a winger or a full-back. I think that is a good part of my game. I can play in different positions and I can slot in where needed.”

Being moved around the pitch is nothing new for Wilson.

“When I was growing up, I played as an attacking midfielder,” he added.

“When I started to get older and a bit bigger, I was moved to centre-back but when I used to get the ball I would just run the whole pitch with it.

“When I got into men’s football with West Brom, they said the fastest route into the first team would be at full-back because I was good at defending and good going forward.

“When I went to Exeter, I was played more on the wing. But I think first and foremost I am a full-back. I can play either side, that doesn’t bother me, but I prefer right-back.”

Wilson acknowledges there is still room for improvement, particularly with his crossing and positioning.

“I would say I need to work on my crossing – I need to integrate it into my game,” Wilson continued.

“In training I can whip 100 balls in but in a game it’s much different because you’re on the move and there are so many different factors. I’d like to make sure that final ball is always perfect or just in the right area.

“I would also like to improve my positioning. You can always keep learning more about your positioning. If I am in the right position, then I haven’t got to rely on my speed or my physicality to get me out of trouble.”
