Fleetwood 0-0 Walsall

17 November 2018

The Saddlers recorded a fourth clean sheet of the season after being held to a goalless draw at Fleetwood.

Russell Martin went closest for the Saddlers with a first-half header, while Jason Holt missed Town's best opportunity.

The result leaves Walsall ninth in League One, ahead of the 3.00pm kick-offs.

In front of the Sky Sports cameras, Josh Ginnelly threatened first with a curling free-kick which went through the wall but was held by keeper Alex Cairns.

Jon Guthrie then rose highest from a deep Ginnelly corner but was unable to guide his towering header on target.

The Cod Army's best chance of the first half came on 14 minutes when Jason Holt blazed over from 15 yards after being picked out by Ross Wallace.

Walsall were enjoying the better of proceedings and forced ten corners inside the opening period.

From one half-cleared set-piece, Ginnelly swung an inviting ball into the box towards an unmarked Russell Martin – who had stayed forward – but the defender glanced his header over.

Liam Roberts was called into action twice at the other end, making an unorthodox stop to shovel away Wallace’s curling effort before holding Cian Bolger’s long-range strike.

The visiting custodian foiled Wallace again at the start of the second half, getting down well to keep out the Scottish winger’s acrobatic flying volley.

Joey Barton’s side were now playing with more urgency and only a superb goal-saving block from Nicky Devlin prevented Hunter from opening the scoring.

In the main, chances were proving in short supply; Wallace’s 30-yard free-kick was easy for Roberts, while Zeli Ismail’s low drive was blocked after a well-worked short corner routine.

The deadlock was nearly broken with seven minutes left as substitute Morgan Ferrier headed Ismail’s right-wing delivery narrowly wide.

Paddy Madden could have won it for Fleetwood late on but he diverted strike-partner Ched Evans’ low cut-back over the bar.
