Saddlers drawn away to Tranmere in Carabao Cup first round

15 June 2018

The Saddlers have been drawn away to League Two newcomers Tranmere Rovers in the Carabao Cup first round.

Micky Mellon’s Rovers gained promotion back to the EFL last season after winning the National League play-offs.

New Saddlers signings Andy Cook and Josh Ginnelly each played an important role in the Super Whites’ promotion success.

Striker Cook scored 28 goals, including one in the play-off final victory over Boreham Wood, while winger Ginnelly made 14 appearances on loan from Burnley.

Our last meeting with Rovers came en route to the 2015 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.

Dean Smith’s men won 5-4 on penalties after coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 in 90 minutes, with Paul Downing scoring the decisive spot-kick.

The tie will take place at Prenton Park on the week commencing 13th August.
