Watch European giants Ajax at the Banks’s!

18 July 2018

European giants Ajax are visiting the Banks’s tomorrow – and it’s a game not to be missed!

The Amsterdam outfit are the most decorated club in Dutch football, having won a record 33 Eredivisie titles and 18 KNVB Cups.

They have also enjoyed glittering success in Europe, winning three successive European Cups in the early 1970s and the Champions League in 1995, as well as the 1992 UEFA Cup.

Many iconic players have worn the famous red-and-white shirt, the most celebrated being three-time Ballon d’Or winner Johan Cruyff, after whom their 54,000-capacity stadium is named.

Classy defender Frank de Boer, combative midfielder Edgar Davids and Euro ‘88 top scorer Marco van Basten all sit in the pantheon of Ajax greats.

Former Premier League stars Edwin van der Sar, Dennis Bergkamp and Luis Suarez also represented the Dutch club with distinction, as did the Netherlands’ most-capped player, Wesley Sneijder.

The 2010 World Cup finalist was a product of the fabled De Toekomst academy, which is regarded as one of the best in the world.

The current team is brimming with exciting homegrown talent – and in 2017 they became the youngest-ever team to feature in a European final.

Winger David Neres, attacking midfielder Frenkie de Jong and defender Matthijs de Ligt – who has been linked with Barcelona – are recognised as some of Europe’s hottest young prospects.

Under Erik ten Hag, who replaced Marcel Keizer in December, Ajax finished second behind PSV in the Eredivisie last season.

It was the fourth consecutive campaign they have finished runners-up, with their most recent league title – and last piece of silverware – coming back in 2014.

Tickets for Walsall v Ajax on Thursday 19th July (7.45pm) are priced at £12 for adults and £6 for concessions (Over-60s and Under-18s).
