Young Reporter: Walsall 1-2 Blackburn

Scotia Smith's match report...

26 February 2018

On a chilly February afternoon, the Saddlers were looking to continue their recent good form against league leaders, Blackburn Rovers. A whopping crowd of 6893, including 2,800 away fans, were there to watch this fascinating match up.

The game started slowly but came to life in the 16th minute…..

GOAL!  Graham latched on to a loose ball in the box and tucked home the opener for the visitors, much to the delight of their noisy fans.

Walsall was stunned but there was worse to come in the 25th minute…..

GOAL! Graham scored again to put Blackburn 2 nil up and the home side was in disarray. It almost got worse shortly after when Armstrong broke away but hit the bar! Phew!

As the half wore down, Walsall needed a miracle and they got one in the 44th minute…..

GOAL! In a rare Walsall attack, Edwards’ cross/shot was expertly turned in by Fitzwater. The Saddlers were back in the game and were now looking forward to the second half.

Walsall started the half very positively indeed. They now bossed possession and fresh legs were brought on – Ngoy for Shaibu and Kouhyar for the injured Edwards.

Blackburn were now struggling to contain Walsall. Ngoy was denied twice by their keeper, who also tipped over Oztumer’s cracking free kick. The impressive Kouhyar had a couple of half chances to pull the Saddlers level right at the end.

However, the relieved visitors held on and celebrated with their ecstatic fans at the end of a very entertaining game.

In the press conference, JW was proud of the second half performance, in particular and felt we were slightly unfortunate not to grab a point.

It’s an away trip to Peterborough up next for the lads.  UTS!!
