Development Squad: Walsall 0-0 Bradford City

21 February 2018

The Saddlers were held to a 0-0 draw at Birmingham County FA by Bradford City in the Central League.

The closest John Ward’s side came was via a Tobias Hayles-Docherty shot in the first half that rattled off the crossbar.

But Ward will have been pleased overall by the efforts of his side in both final thirds of the pitch.

The Saddlers started with several senior players - including Liam Kinsella, Kory Roberts and Reece Flanagan - against The Bantams and the hosts flew out of the traps early on.

Flanagan did well to create space for himself in the box after just two minutes as the ball fell to him 18 yards out. The central midfielder fired a shot off at goal, only for it to deflect off two defenders and head over the bar.

Winger Maz Kouhyar fired at City keeper George Sykes-Kenworthy two minutes later as The Saddlers kept pushing from kick-off, before Hayles-Docherty’s fierce effort, after the young winger cut in from the right-hand side inside his full-back, hit the frame of the goal and bounced over.

Kouhyar was played in by forward Mitch Candlin on 25 minutes but his low drive was held by Sykes-Kenworthy, before Bradford had their best chance of the game when Joel Grodowski tried to lob Brandon Ganley from distance, only for his effort to hit the side-netting.

The Saddlers began the second half as they started the first, with Hayles-Docherty instrumental in two early chances. First he found left-back Callum Cockerill-Mollett to his left, with the defender drilling at goal from inside the box only for Sykes-Kenworthy to tip over the bar, before Hayles-Docherty made space for himself on the right and drove into the side-netting from close range.

Grodowski forced a fine save from Ganley just past the hour, his low free-kick from 20 yards parried behind for a corner by the Saddlers’  keeper.

And Grodowski would force a last-ditch block from Kory Roberts in their 73rd minute, his shot deflecting over after good build-up play from Kai Brunker.

Cameron Peters came close late on with two efforts only for the keeper to smother the ball as the match ended goalless.

SADDLERS: Ganley; Kinsella, Roberts (C), Arthur, Cockerill-Mollett; Hayles-Docherty, Flanagan, Shorrock, Kouhyar; Peters, Candlin. Subs not used: Dawe, Kendrick, Fisher, Mason, Parker.
