Gillingham 0-0 Walsall

17 February 2018

Chances were at a premium as we extended our unbeaten run to four matches with a battling goalless draw at Gillingham.

Tom Eaves hit the woodwork twice for the Gills, who created the better opportunities, but Walsall defended stoutly to keep a clean sheet.

Neither team threatened during a scrappy, evenly-contested opening 15 minutes.

Steve Lovell’s side enjoyed a decent spell shortly after, with Ben Nugent looping a far-post header onto the roof of the net from a corner.

The home side came within a lick of paint of opening the scoring on 20 minutes as Tom Eaves’ towering header from Connor Ogilvie’s left-wing cross clipped the top of the bar.

Eaves was proving a nuisance and went close again two minutes later, meeting Luke O’Neill’s whipped back-post centre with a downward header which bounced down into the ground and wide.

The Saddlers’ first sight of goal came just past the half-hour, George Dobson finding space and unleashing a low 25-yard drive which Gills keeper Tomas Holy palmed away.

Chances remained in short supply, although Gillingham did threaten again before the break as Callum Reilly drilled a left-footed shot wide from the edge of the box.

The few opportunities that were created in the second half fell to the Gills.

Danger-man Eaves stung the palms of Liam Roberts with a powerful 52nd-minute drive and the same man pulled a low shot wide moments later after a quick Gills break.

Gillingham continued to knock on the door, rattling the woodwork for a second time on 65 minutes.

O’Neill’s free-kick was headed back across goal by Gabriel Zakuani into the path of Eaves, who hooked a right-footed effort against the outside of the post.

The hosts almost got their noses in front with ten minutes remaining when Josh Parker glanced a header inches wide from Mark Byrne’s inviting cross.

Parker then sent another header off target, this time from Scott Wagstaff’s delivery, as Gillingham searched in vain for a winner.
