Leighswood win EFL Kids Cup

The primary school will represent Walsall FC…

7 February 2018

LeighswoodSchool were victorious in Walsall FC’s EFL Kids Cup competition on Saturday.

After winning their preliminary round, the school came back for club finals day at the weekend along with teams from Holy Trinity, Ryders Hayes and Whetstone Field.

Leighswood ran out winners of the six-a-side competition after beating Holy Trinity in their semi-final, and then Ryders Hayes in the final.

The Year 5 and 6 pupils then had the opportunity to act as Flag Bearers in the Saddlers’ win over MK Dons, as well as meeting Walsall players Mitch Candlin and Will Shorrock.

Harry Rogers, Sports Teacher at LeighswoodSchool, said: “It’s been a great day for the lads, they’ve thoroughly enjoyed themselves

“Coming from a football background, I like the opportunities that they’ve got now and the way it has all been tied in with a match day I think is brilliant as well.”

The U11 schoolchildren will now go on to represent Walsall FC in Oxford next month, at the League One South finals against 11 other schools.

The Southern victors will then face the Northern winners at Wembley Stadium, on the day of the League One Play-Off Final in May.

Paul Larvin, Manager for Education at Walsall FC Community Programme, added: “Our EFL Kids Cup has been a great success this year - overall we’ve had 36 schools taking part, with four returning for the club finals.

“The standard has been very good today but the most important thing was that the children enjoyed the occasion.

“Leighswood were worthy winners in the end, and we wish them the best of luck for the next round."
