Walsall 2-2 Luton Town

29 December 2018

Walsall were left to rue another late goal as substitution Kazenga Lua-Lua rescued a point for Luton Town in the last minute of stoppage time.

Goals from Morgan Ferrier and Andy Cook were unfortunately overshadowed as James Collins and Lua-Lua earned the visitors a somewhat undeserved point at the Banks’s Stadium.

The Hatters had the first meaningful chance of the game when Elliot Lee collected the ball on the edge of the box from Andy Shinnie and the midfielder turned and was denied by a superb flying save from Liam Roberts.

From the resulting James Justin corner, Luton captain Sonny Bradley saw his goal-bound header claimed again by Roberts.

Just minutes later and the visitors went close to opening the scoring when Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu was teed up just outside the box but his curling drive cannoned back off the outside of the right upright.

With 26 minutes on the clock, Walsall had the chance to take the lead when captain George Dobson surged into the box, only to be brought tumbling down by a Town defender.

Up stepped Ferrier to slot home the resulting penalty to score his fifth goal of the season in all competitions.

In the second half the Saddlers were working relentlessly to stop the visitors getting into any sort of flow and just after the hour mark, they were rewarded for their efforts with a second goal.

On the left hand side, Ferrier slipped on the ball, before getting up to play it to Leahy. The full-back saw his cross flapped at by James Shea in the Town goal and Cook had the simple task of tapping it into the empty net.

Five minutes after Cook’s goal, the visitors got themselves on the scoresheet through Collins. A mazy run from Alan McCormack saw him beat two defenders before his effort was blocked, only for the ball to land at the feet of Collins, who fired between the legs of Roberts.

With five minutes added on, Luton threw everything at the Saddlers and in the last minute, there was pinball in the box and Kazenga Lula-Lua bundled the ball home.
