Devlin: Christmas is make or break

21 December 2018

Defender Nicky Devlin says that the Christmas period will be the make or break of the Saddlers’ season with four games in 11 days, starting with a trip to Peterborough United tomorrow.

After the trip to ABAX Stadium, the team take on Bristol Rovers on Boxing day and then Luton Town on the 29th, both of which are at the Banks’s, before heading to The Valley on New Year’s Day to face Charlton Athletic.

And Devlin feels as though this time of year is always the most testing time for players and managers alike.

“It’s the most testing time of the season,” said Devlin. “And I’m sure most people will tell you, it’s a time when you either push on or fall back depending on how you deal with it.

“We know if we want to push on and make a good season of it we have to start taking points off the teams towards the top of the table.

“I don’t think we have really done that enough this year. The teams that are around us challenging, we have not really done well enough against them.

“We have not won many of the games being honest. We have to put that right and there is no better time to start when you have got two or three of them coming up in a row.

“If you do go on that wee run you find yourself right in amongst it.”
