Walsall 2-1 Gillingham

18 August 2018

Dean Keates’ side continued their unbeaten start to the season with victory over Gillingham, with Morgan Ferrier and Isaiah Osbourne scoring for the Saddlers.

In the first half, the Saddlers carried on the momentum that they had from Tuesday night in their win over Tranmere Rovers.

From the off Ferrier was bright and the striker, who opened his account on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup, was rewarded for his terrier-like approach as he opened the scoring with 12 minutes on the clock.

The 23-year-old latched onto George Dobson’s through ball before cutting inside his man and firing it into the top right corner with a rocket of a drive.

Halfway through the first half and Jack Fitzwater came close to opening his Saddlers account but his effort was well blocked by a last-ditch tackle.

But Keates’ men gave themselves some breathing space just before the break when Osbourne found a second goal, thanks to some help from the left post.

Kieron Morris, who was lively throughout, raced down the right, chopped back taking two Gillingham defenders out of the game before laying it off to Osbourne. Unmarked on the edge of the box, the midfielder curled his effort into the far corner.

In the second half, the Saddlers were once again on the front foot as Ferrier and Andy Cook continued to cause problems.

But it was the visitors who scored the only goal in the last 45 as Tom Eaves popped up with a last-minute goal, which turned out to be nothing more than a consolation goal.
