Keates delighted with cup progress

15 August 2018

Dean Keates was delighted to see his side progress into the second round of the Carabao Cup – but admitted we did make it hard for ourselves.

Goals from Morgan Ferrier, Josh Ginnelly and Zeli Ismail were enough to send the Saddlers into the next round, despite a late goal from the home side.

Speaking after the game, Keates was keen to take the positives from the first-round success, saying: “We had a lot of chances in the game but we didn’t kill them off in the first half.

“In the second half we broke well with pace and scored a couple of good goals, but we never like to make it easy for ourselves.”

Keates made three changes to the side that drew at Scunthorpe United, with Liam Kinsella, Kane Wilson and Chris Dunn all coming in.

The manager was pleased with how they performed – and says they have given him a selection headache heading into Saturday’s game with Gillingham.

He continued: “We won’t get carried away with it but we are happy with the performance and we will now get ready for Saturday.

“The three lads that came in tonight were outstanding and the subs that came on contributed.

“It is a squad game as just 11 players won’t get us through the season.

“When the lads get the opportunity, then all they can do is the best for themselves and the best for the team and then it gives me a problem.”
