Whitney heaps praise on 'outstanding' Saddlers

21 October 2017

Jon Whitney heaped praise on his “outstanding” Saddlers team after our comfortable 3-0 victory at newly-promoted Doncaster.

Two goals in five second-half minutes from top scorer Erhun Oztumer, and a first goal of the season for Kieron Morris, secured a professional away win for Jon Whitney’s men.

And Whitney was delighted with the performance of his team.

“You have got to be clinical away from home,” said the boss.

“You’ve got to handle the pressure they put you under and I thought we handled the elements better than them.

“It’s always difficult facing a strong wild, psychologically as well. It makes it difficult to get out of your own half but we handled it well in the first half.

“We were a little bit lucky when they hit the post but we dug in.

“The energy from the lads, and the defensive energy from Amadou Bakayoko especially, was pleasing.

“Oztumer got his rewards because he did a job defensively for the team. Tyler [Roberts] led the line really well and Ama’s energy on the left was outstanding.

“They didn’t really look like getting a goal second half - I thought it was quite comfortable.

“It was a good away performance and that’s what you want to do – soak up some pressure, hit them on the counter attack and score three excellent team goals.

“All the credit goes to the players – I’m proud of them. They were outstanding today.”
