Whitney bemoans Saddlers' defending

4 November 2017

Jon Whitney bemoaned his side’s defending after the Saddlers’ 2-1 FA Cup first-round defeat to Newport.

Goals from Frank Nouble and Shawn McCoulskey booked the Exiles’ place in round two.

Substitute Amadou Bakayoko pulled one back late on but it wasn’t enough.

“The first goal was a bit fortuitous and we said at half-time that the first ten minutes [of the second half] would be really important,” said Whitney.

“We felt if we kept it nice and tight we would then create openings.

“But you can’t give a goal away after 28 seconds; it makes it so difficult.

“Going 2-0 down, we then had to break two banks down - a four and a six - and that’s difficult.

“We pushed at the end, in the last five or six minutes, but it’s always an uphill task when you give away a goal like that.

"The fans showed really good support tonight and we understand their frustrations."
