Whitney: an excellent team performance

25 November 2017

Jon Whitney hailed an “excellent team performance” from his side after the Saddlers’ hard-fought 2-1 victory at AFC Wimbledon.

First-half goals from Erhun Oztumer – a 30-yard screamer – and Amadou Bakayoko gave Walsall back-to-back league wins for the first time since March.

And Whitney was delighted with his team’s display, highlighting his players' maturity.

“It was an excellent team performance,” said the boss.

“An away performance has to have bits of quality, which we had with Erhun’s goal and the second goal was a good team goal as well.

“We weathered the storm. We reacted to their first goal well and didn’t panic too much.

“In the second half they were going to have a period but we put bodies on the line when we needed to.

“Then I thought we controlled it and kept it well. We were always a danger on the counter attack and saw out the last 15 minutes without giving them any real opportunities.

“It was a mature performance from a young team.”
