Goals from Cairns and Candlin see the young Saddlers finish third...
Three points, two goals and a clean sheet for the young Saddlers as the 2016/17 campaign came to an end.Goals from Joseph Cairns and Mitch Candlin secured victory over rivals Shrewsbury as Walsall secured a third-placed finish.
From the first whistle it was a feisty affair, with both teams wanting to make their mark on the game.
But it was Graham Biggs' side who had the upper hand as they carved out a couple of decent opportunities in the opening exchanges.
Twenty-five minutes in and Walsall struck first to make it 1-0.
Candlin began a Saddlers counter attack as he fed left-back Cody Fisher out wide who forced himself into the box to pick out Cairns with a cut-back back and he finished first-time.
Centre-half Ben Kendrick nearly doubled the lead just over 10 minutes later as he powerfully headed a Daniel O'Sullivan corner towards goal but he was unable to keep his effort under the bar.
Just before the break Walsall switched off from a Shrewsbury set piece but Roberts' unmarked header at the back post went just wide.
Half-time: Walsall 1-0 Shrewsbury
It was more of the same for the Saddlers in the second half.
Cairns was on the wrong end of a high boot within the first few minutes which set the tempo for the rest of the game.
Substitute Debert Massamba had a good opportunity to add to the scoresheet as he drove at the Shrews defence but his left-foot effort across goal went just wide.
Walsall did eventually make it 2-0 through forward Candlin.
He was alert enough to latch onto a sloppy pass from Shrewsbury defender Taylor which allowed him to round the keeper and slot into an empty net.
It was then a case of the Saddlers seeing out the game but Shrewsbury were handed a lifeline in the last few minutes for an apparent handball in the box.
Shrewsbury's McAtee stepped up to the spot but Brandon Ganley dived down low to save his shot and keep the score at 2-0.
