#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: 9TH MARCH 1993

9 March 2017

Goals from Clarke, McDonald and Knight secure a 3-2 win...

Tuesday 9th March 1993 - Walsall 3-2 Chesterfield

Going into this tie, the Saddlers were looking to erase the memory of their 2-1 loss at home to Lincoln City in their last league match. Prior to the defeat against the Imps, Walsall had won three games on the bounce, beating Division Three rivals Carlisle United, York City and Scunthorpe United. The Saddlers knew a win would help consolidate a play-off spot during the final months of the 1992/93 season. A strong, experienced Chesterfield side were also in search of three points to potentially kick-start their own play-off bid.

Among those lining up for Walsall were: local based shot stopper Mark Gayle; former West Bromwich Albion, Southampton and Stoke City left-back Derek Statham; well-travelled Short Heath-born striker Wayne Clarke (the younger brother of ex-Walsall striker Allan Clarke); popular defender Stuart Ryder; 30-time Cameroon international midfielder Charlie Ntamark; former Saddlers manager and defender Dean Smith; and striker Mike Cecere who, in four years with the club, made 112 appearances and scored 32 goals.

The Saddlers went on to win the game 3-2 in an exciting, well-matched contest. Goals from Wayne Clarke, Rod McDonald and Richard Knight gave Walsall the edge in front of 2,884 spectators at the Bescot Stadium.

Walsall would finish the 1992/93 campaign in fifth place on 73 points, six points away from an automatic promotion place. Unfortunately, the Saddlers came up short in gaining promotion after losing 3-1 on aggregate to Crewe in the play-off semi-finals. Crewe would eventually fall short to York City in the subsequent play-off final. Chesterfield, on the other hand, recorded a 12th place finish on 56 points. Just a month after the Saddlers’ 3-2 victory over the Spireites, Chesterfield beat Walsall 2-1 in the reverse fixture at their old Saltergate ground.
