LAIRD: MCCARTHY CAN REACH THE TOP

30 March 2017

Left-back praises teammate...

Scott Laird believes teammate Jason McCarthy has the potential to reach the highest level of the English game.

Southampton loanee McCarthy has played every minute for the Saddlers in league and cup this season, scoring five goals in 45 appearances.

And left-back Laird has paid tribute to the his close friend – hailing him as the “quickest player” he has played with.

“He’s not just a good footballer, but a really nice lad,” Laird commented.

“I’ve had a good time with him since I came in – like I have with all the lads – but me and Jase seem to have hit it off really well.

“He’s a friend who I’ll continue to keep in touch with and footballing-wise, he’s got everything to go to the top.

“He’s the quickest player I’ve seen – and I’ve played with a lot of quick guys – and he’s got a good football brain as well. He’s very clever and wants to learn.

“He’s always asking questions and wants to work hard as well, which is the main thing. He wants to improve and work on the things he’s good at and not so good at.

“He’s still a young boy and the best thing for him was getting out and playing football. He did it last year at Wycombe and he’s done it this year here.

“To have amassed over 100 games at his young age is brilliant. The more he can keep playing, he’s only going to progress up the leagues.”
