Guthrie: Style of play attracted me

5 July 2017

New signing Jon Guthrie says he was attracted to Walsall by our style of play.

The 24-year-old turned down a new contract offer from Crewe to join the Saddlers on a two-year deal last month.

The 6’3” centre-back played against us twice during his time with the Railwaymen, with both meetings ending in 1-1 draws.

And having seen us play first hand, Guthrie – who considers himself a calm and composed defender – felt we were the perfect fit.

“I heard from the gaffer a couple of months ago and he said early that he wanted to bring me in, which was nice to hear,” said Guthrie.

“I came to the training ground, saw the facilities and learned more about the club.

“I knew from playing against them the style they play, they like to play football and are well respected. I thought it would be the best fit for me.

“I like to think of myself as quite a calm defender. I’m comfortable on the ball and like to play out from the back.

“I genuinely just enjoy defending and I like the hard side of it as well, so hopefully they [the fans] will like me.

“The gaffer said how he wanted to play and it seemed to fit me well. Being the player I am, it just seemed the best fit for me.”
