The Saddlers beat Bristol Rovers on this day seven years ago...

Tuesday 9th February 2010 - Bristol Rovers 0-1 Walsall

The Saddlers travelled to the Memorial Stadium without a win in eight games, and their hosts Bristol Rovers had made a poor start to 2010 with only one victory in January.

This fixture was actually Walsall’s second game in three days against the Gas after a 0-0 draw at the Bescot Stadium a few days prior to this midweek tie.

Lining up for then Saddlers manager Chris Hutchings’ side was popular goalkeeper Clayton Ince, now Stourbridge defender Darryl Westlake, full-back Netan Sansara, 6'6" centre-half Clayton McDonald, local lads Richard Taundry and Peter Till, Jamie Vincent, playmaker Matt Richards, commanding centre midfielder Dwayne Mattis, striker Alex Nicholls and current Watford target man Troy Deeney.

On the 30 minute mark, Walsall took the lead when Richard Taundry, who scored six goals during his six-year spell with the club, fired home after an Alex Nicholls shot was blocked.

In the second half, Rovers continued to push on and attack for a goal which would tie the game, and they had a perfect opportunity to do so after the break when they won a penalty in the 81st minute.

The spot-kick was taken by Jeff Hughes, Gas’ Northern Irish attacking midfielder, but his attempt was saved by Saddlers ‘keeper Clayton Ince, who then beated away Paul Heffernan's follow-up effort.

The Saddlers would hold on to see the game out and earn the three points with a fantastic 1-0 win away from home.

One week later, Walsall travelled to Elland Road to face Leeds United, and they would pull off an impressive 2-1 win against The Whites.

Overall in the 2009/10 campaign, the Saddlers would record a 10th finishing position totalling 62 points from 46 games.
