Whitney wary of Northampton backlash

15 December 2017

Saddlers boss Jon Whitney is wary of a backlash from struggling Northampton this weekend.

The second-bottom Cobblers are winless in six matches in all competitions and were thrashed 5-1 by Oldham in their last league outing.

And Whitney, whose team have won three straight league games, has warned his players against complacency.

“I know Jimmy [Floyd Hasselbaink] – we are on the same LMA course and he will demand a response from last week,” he said.

“He’ll be looking to get to January to make a couple of changes, but he’s got some class in his side.

“John-Joe O’Toole has got a slight knock but I expect him to play because he is an important player for them. Matt Grimes is important and they have got some energy up top.

“They have got players who, when they click, will give anyone a game.

“We are expecting one of our toughest games of the season. They need a result and we’ve got to match their application and desire.

“The start of the game will be important and the first goal is always important in these games.

“We have to make sure we stay nice and solid and focused, be defensively sound but have an attacking threat.”

The match is likely to come too soon for striker Tyler Roberts and goalkeeper Liam Roberts, although Joe Edwards should be back in contention.
