Guthrie: Saddlers will stay positive heading into next game + Cuvelier update

19 December 2017

Walsall will keep positive heading into next week’s Sky Bet League One game at Rochdale, says defender Jon Guthrie.

The ever-present centre-half made his 27th appearance of the season at Northampton Town’s Sixfields last weekend as The Saddlers were beaten 2-1 by The Cobblers.

Jon Whitney’s side took an early lead through Erhun Oztumer, who grabbed his 11th goal of the season, following Amadou Bakayoko’s squared pass into the box with a minute on the clock.

But two goals for Chris Long, the first coming just minutes after Oztumer’s opener, gave The Saddlers a mountain to climb with Northampton seeing out the victory.

Prior to the weekend, The Saddlers had won three straight League One games against Fleetwood Town, AFC Wimbledon and Scunthorpe United.

And Guthrie insists the squad are now focusing on getting back to winning ways as soon as possible.

“It’s never nice to concede so quick after a goal but that happens in football and you’ve got to get on with the game,” said Guthrie.

“We always try to test the keeper - we’re an attacking team - but unfortunately it just didn’t work out.

“It shows you that in this league anyone can beat anyone - for now we’ll focus on next week.

“We want to keep climbing the table and we’ve been on a good run lately so I don’t think we should get too down about Northampton. We’ve got to focus on getting back on a good run as soon as we can.

“We have a lot of games coming thick and fast and with a good run of results you can push right up the table.”

Midfielder Flo Cuvelier was forced off early in the Northampton game with an injury following a robust challenge.

Cuvelier has had a scan on his knee, and more will be known in the coming days once the swelling around the affected area has gone down.
