Whitney: We were the better team

19 August 2017

Jon Whitney felt Walsall were the better team in today’s 1-1 draw with Portsmouth.

Luke Leahy’s 47th-minute tap-in put the Saddlers in front, only for Brett Pitman to equalise with a penalty 16 minutes from time.

And Whitney believed we deserved more from the game.

"I thought there was only one winner,” said the Saddlers boss. “Amadou [Bakayoko] had that chance [at 1-0] to put the game to bed, but he didn't take it.

"We are disappointed we haven't won but our heads are high. I am proud of the players - their energy and their work ethic.

"You come here, they are a big team. I know they’ve come up from League Two but look at the following they have got, it's a great place to play football.

“I told them to enjoy it.

“I’m disappointed with the point but happy with the performance as I thought we were the better team.

We came away from home to a team that have got a really good attacking threat and we contained them really well.

“Our effort and our pressing was excellent and we were a danger as well.”
