West Bromwich light heavyweight Josh Stokes is looking forward to his first fight of the new season and is targeting a stoppage victory in his fourth professional bout.
Stokes appears on BCB Promotions’ “On The Edge” show on Friday, September 1st in the Stadium Suite at Banks’s Stadium, home of Walsall FC.
The 23-year-old had a solid debut campaign last time out - points victories from his first three paid outings, including a debut win at the Banks’s Stadium against Mitch Mitchell back in February.
Since then Stokes has picked up wins over Curtis Gargano at the Holiday Inn, Birmingham and Richard Harrison at Walsall Town Hall, all three bouts going the four-round distance.
“It would be nice to get a stoppage but to be honest I’m not going to go mad to get it,” he said. “If it comes, it comes.
“The lads I’ve been fighting at the moment are good at surviving in there because they’ve been in a lot of fights.
“Mitchell was a good first fight for me. He’s good - he came forward quite a lot as well and I’m glad he did because some just want to survive.
“I’ve had some decent fights. I think my style suits the professional ranks better than when I was in the amateurs.
“I pick my shots a bit more - in the amateurs, everything is going 100 miles an hour because it’s only over the three rounds.
“I’ve been training really hard for this and I want to better my performance each time.”
Stokes is ambitious and wants to be fighting for titles before long - and to keep performing on stages like that of the Stadium Suite at the home of Walsall FC. His younger brother – Tom – fights for the Midlands Area title at the end of September and Josh wants a shot at area honours himself soon enough.
“It could be the best thing for me to get used to that stage in the Stadium Suite,” said Stokes.
“I want more fights for the rest of this year but hopefully I can start stepping up the rounds next year, and hopefully this time next year I can be fighting for titles. Tom gets his first proper shot later this month. I’ll be cheering him on and I’d like to follow suit sooner rather than later.
“I’ve been with Errol Johnson for a year now and he’s still teaching me a lot of new things.
“I’m looking forward to it.”
