Whitney: Let's give the home fans something to shout about

24 April 2017

Jon Whitney wants to give the Walsall fans “something to shout about” as Port Vale visit the Banks’s Stadium on Tuesday evening (7.45pm kick-off).

The final week of the season sees the Saddlers take on the Valiants in their penultimate game in midweek before the 2016/17 Sky Bet League One season draws to a close on Sunday against MK Dons.

Vale need a point at least to avoid relegation on Tuesday night and the Saddlers boss says his side will have to match the visitors’ fight at the Banks’s.

“They’ll be coming into this to really try to make sure it goes to the last game,” Whitney said of Michael Brown’s side.

“I thought they were really good for the first 30 minutes before the sending off at Bolton - they were the better team.

“They’re in a precarious position and we have to make sure we don’t give them a helping hand - and we give our fans something to shout about.

“I’ve got to pick a team that has some energy.

“Go and enjoy the occasion - that’ll be key for us (Tuesday) night.

“We’re professionals - I’ll make sure the players give their all on the pitch and we’ll do whatever we can to make sure they go away with nothing.

“We have to match how much it means to them to stay in the league.

“We have to have that same desire and passion to play with a bit of energy and a bit of bravery to get on the ball, probe and cause them problems.”
