OZTUMER NAMED IN PFA LEAGUE ONE TEAM OF THE YEAR

20 April 2017

Playmaker recognised by his peers...

Walsall playmaker Erhun Oztumer has been named in the PFA League One Team of the Year.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign with the Saddlers, scoring 14 goals in 43 appearances.

The creative schemer has also won the League One Goal of the Month award on two occasions, in October and February.

“I feel really good,” said Oztumer. “I know the players vote for this award so it’s nice that players from all over the league have voted for me.

“When I first signed for Walsall I always said it was my first choice because of the way we play - we keep the ball on the floor.

“I knew I would have a really good season and the gaffer has really helped me to score these goals, telling me to express myself in the final third and I’ve done that.

“The players try to give the ball to me in the final third because they know I’m a creative player.

"I’ve got to thank the staff, the manager and the players for helping me this season.”

Manager Jon Whitney added: “It's really great for his career - not many players get to be in Team of the Year.

“It's really great to be nominated and see your name up on the big screen. To any of the players nominated, it's a great accolade.

“Erhun deserves it. He's got his goals this year - when we brought him in I saw him as someone who could provide a lot of assists. To get the goals he's got is a real added bonus and hopefully he's not finished yet.

“It was only three years ago he was at Dulwich Hamlet scoring goals. It shows what his hard work is producing.”

Five Sheffield United players – goalkeeper Simon Moore, right-back Kieron Freeman, midfielders Mark Duffy and John Fleck, and League One top scorer Billy Sharp – have also been named in the division’s best XI.

Bolton centre-halves Mark Beevers and David Wheater, Bradford left-back James Meredith, Scunthorpe winger Josh Morris and Bury hitman James Vaughan complete the League One Team of the Year.

The 44th PFA Awards will be held in Grosvenor House in London on Sunday 23rd April.
