Oztumer credits boss Whitney for impressive form

The playmaker is our top scorer with 14 goals...

Erhun Oztumer has credited manager Jon Whitney for his impressive form this season.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign at the Banks’s, scoring 14 goals in 43 appearances.

And the creative schemer says the boss’ decision to play him in a more advanced role has "paid off".

“I need to give credit to the gaffer,” said Oztumer. "He’s played me a bit more offensive, told me to stay a bit higher and it’s paid off.

"I’ve got to thank the staff and the players as well because they’ve tried to give me the ball in the final third as much as possible.

“At the beginning of the season I said I wanted double figures in goals.

“I wanted to join Walsall FC – they were the only League One club I would join because of the way we play. I knew I was going to have a good season but how good, I didn’t know.

“It’s been a good season for me and the team. I feel mid-table is a good start for us and hopefully next season we’ll push on.”

The Saddlers head to Coventry tomorrow and Oztumer says the squad are fully focused on the job in hand.

“We’ve got our targets,” he added. “Players are fighting for new contracts, their careers and we’ve got a points tally we want to hit, so it’s not like we’re playing for nothing.

“We’re pushing hard and want to get maximum points to see where we finish.

“Coventry have just pride to play for so I think they’ll be relaxed. It’ll be a tough game but we’re ready.”
