ST THOMAS MORE REPORTER: WALSALL 1-4 SCUNTHORPE

28 September 2016

Match report by Luke Kent...

Last night’s performance was “woeful” in the words of Jon Whitney who was disappointed with Walsall’s 4-1 loss to league leaders Scunthorpe United. The visitors looked on top throughout the match; Walsall manager Whitney believes the match was accurately represented with the final scoreline and that it was a match which he believes was “boys vs men” as Scunthorpe outdid Walsall “on the basics”.

The manager said the players should have a “long hard look at themselves” before heading into the Millwall game this weekend. The manager also wanted to “apologise on behalf of the team” due to a poor performance by the hosts which resulted in many of the fans leaving the game early. Whitney says the result of the game “hurt” him and he wants to see the players “fight” in the next match.

The visitors went 2-0 up in the first 12 minutes with Josh Morris converting a penalty and tidying up a rebound. There was some hope for the home fans as Oztumer scored in the 45th minute and Jackson forced a save from Daniels in added time. This hope was short lived as two minutes into the second half, Scunthorpe added to their lead with Bishop and Josh Morris put the final nail in the coffin with a third goal to complete his hat trick late on.

Whitney said he couldn’t believe the “naivety” of some of the players and said he wants players “who wants to fight” on the pitch and overall wants to see a massive improvement quickly.
